FROM 1945
Bespoke Architectural Metalwork Since 1945
TO TODAY
A legacy shaped
over time
Burvills was founded with a simple belief in doing things properly. From early workshop beginnings to complex architectural projects, that approach has remained consistent, shaped by experience and a deep respect for the craft.
Over time, the business has grown, but the principles have not changed. Each generation has built on the last, refining processes, developing skills and maintaining the standards that define Burvills today.
1945
Post-war beginnings
In the years following the end of the World War II Britain was rebuilding both its cities and industries. Against a backdrop of rationing recovery and renewed optimism Sam Burvill established Burvills in Browns Yard Hersham. What began as a modest fabrication workshop was built on principles that would define the company for decades to come: hard work practical skill and pride in doing things properly. At a time when much of the country was focused on reconstruction Burvills became part of that wider effort producing reliable carefully made metalwork rooted in traditional craftsmanship and earned reputation.
1960’s
Growing with demand
As Britain entered a period of post-war expansion marked by new infrastructure housing and industry Burvills continued to grow alongside it. The move to larger premises on Primrose Road Hersham reflected increasing demand for the company’s work and a steadily developing reputation across the region. While the decade was defined nationally by engineering progress industrial confidence and changing modern lifestyles Burvills remained grounded in practical fabrication expertise and dependable delivery. The business expanded not through scale alone but through consistency building long-term relationships through work that was precise honest and built to last.
1970’s
The second generation
During a decade shaped by economic uncertainty and industrial change across Britain Burvills entered a significant new chapter as Derek Burvill joined the business alongside his father. The arrival of a second generation brought fresh momentum while strengthening the values already established within the workshop. As projects became larger and technically more ambitious the company broadened both its capabilities and reputation across the South East. While much of British manufacturing was beginning to disappear Burvills continued investing in practical knowledge skilled fabrication and the belief that well-made work would always retain its value.
1980’s
Strengthening the foundations
As Britain moved through a decade shaped by industrial change entrepreneurial growth and major shifts across manufacturing Burvills continued strengthening its reputation throughout the South East. The workshop became known for dependable fabrication practical problem solving and the ability to deliver increasingly ambitious projects with consistency and care. While many traditional trades faced uncertainty Burvills remained committed to skilled workmanship and long-term relationships. The decade became an important bridge between the company’s traditional foundations and the more technically advanced future that would follow.
1990’s
Incorporation of S. Burvill & Son Ltd.
The 1990s marked a period of transition throughout British industry with businesses adapting to new technologies changing markets and increasing technical demands. For Burvills continued growth led to a move to Cossins Farm in Cobham providing the workshop space needed to support a larger team and increasingly complex fabrication projects. During the decade Derek formally incorporated S. Burvill & Son Ltd. securing the future of the business while preserving its family-led character. As methods evolved and expectations continued to rise Burvills remained grounded in careful workmanship practical thinking and the long-standing values that had shaped the company for generations.
2000’s
Continuing the legacy
By the early 2000s Britain’s construction and architectural sectors were evolving rapidly with growing emphasis on bespoke fabrication specialist detailing and collaborative project delivery. In 2004 Darren Weston and Chris Clarkson acquired S. Burvill & Son Ltd. having already played key roles in the company’s development over many years. Their leadership continued the culture and standards the business had become known for while guiding Burvills into a more modern and technically capable era. Rather than reinventing the company they strengthened its foundations combining traditional craftsmanship with a progressive and forward-looking approach to fabrication.
2010’s
Investment and evolution
As digital manufacturing and precision-led production increasingly shaped the future of fabrication Burvills entered a major new phase of investment and development. The move to the company’s Esher workshop and offices created space for advanced manufacturing technologies including CNC WaterJet cutting while supporting a growing and increasingly specialised team. Shortly after S. Burvill & Son evolved into Burvills reflecting a more contemporary direction while retaining a clear connection to its heritage. The business continued to modernise carefully and deliberately balancing innovation with the craftsmanship and material understanding built over generations.
Today
The next generation
In 2023, Burvills entered a defining new chapter. Following the retirement of Darren Weston and the tragic passing of Chris Clarkson, Sam Weston took over as Managing Director – continuing a legacy shaped by generations of resilient leadership and skilled craftsmanship.
At a time when many industries favour automation and standardisation, Burvills remains committed to the human side of making: relying on experience, sound judgement, and a genuine pride in detail. Over eighty years after its beginnings in Browns Yard, the company remains grounded in the very principles that first established its reputation: thoughtful fabrication, trusted relationships, and craft that holds.”
